FESTIVALS AND FETES

Brisbane Jain Sang

Jainism is one of the most ancient religions that prescribe a path of non violence towards all living beings. Research predicts it’s an antiquity to the Indus valley civilization dating back to 4000 BC. We are extremely blessed to be a part of this wonderful religion that emphasizes the necessity of self effort to progress the soul towards divine consciousness and liberation. Brisbane is home to many jains. We are constantly adapting and contributing to way life here. Brisbane Jain Sangh was formed in August 2009 to congregate practice and promote Jainism in Brisbane. Though the charter and mission are still evolving, the broad perspective is to provide a strong religious platform for all jains residing in Brisbane.

Since its inspection, BJS has grown by leaps and bounds organizing various religious activities. Though BJS has started with few members connecting with each other over Paryushan Maha Parva, it now has more than 80 members brought together to find and engage in monthly events including Snatrapooja, Bhakti Sandhya, Bhaav Yaatra, Jain Quiz and Samuh Ayambil.

For the very first time BJS aims to celebrate Paryushan Maha Parva on a large scale. Paryushan Maha Parva begins on 4th September 2010. BJS will be organizing Mahaveer Janma Vanchan Mahotsav, Samuh Ekasana, Samvatsari Pratikaman & Swami Vatsalya.

We encourage all jains to come forward and actively participate in the celebration. The Governance Structure of the Organization is established.  Gaurang Shah its President, along with Jiggar Doshi its Secretary are enthusiastic to make BJS a consensus and a collaborative sangh. To join, contribute or volunteer please email BJS on info@brisbanejainsangh.org or contact Gaurang Shah on 0432104372 or Jiggar Doshi on 0432875737.

Mark your calendar: Queensland’s 2010 Multicultural Festival

BACK by popular demand the Queensland Multicultural Festival will be held on Sunday 17 October 2010 at Roma Street Parklands.

Multicultural Affairs Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk said the festival, now in its seventh year, would draw tens of thousands of Queenslanders together to celebrate our multicultural society.

“More than 50,000 people celebrated Queensland’s cultural diversity at last year’s multicultural festival and we expect this year’s festivities will be even bigger,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“A pupil-free day falls on the following day – Monday 18 October – so the whole family can enjoy the day’s activities with plenty of time to recover.”

“There is something for everyone. Roma Street Parkland will be brought to life with a visual and culinary feast of sound, colour and flavour representing many of the 200 cultures that call Queensland home.”

Ms Palaszczuk said the cultural groups would soon be asked to express their interest in putting on Queensland’s biggest multicultural show.

“We’ll soon be calling for expressions of interest from performers, stall holders and artists interested in making this year’s festival program more exciting than ever,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“With almost one in five Queenslander born overseas and many more claiming overseas heritage, this festival is an opportunity to display our rich cultural diversity through music, art and dance.

“I invite all the different community organisations and artists to start thinking about what performances and stalls they can contribute ahead of the 2010 festival application process.”

As planning for the 2010 Queensland Multicultural Festival continues, the Department of Communities website will be updated with information including the program and how stall holders and performers can apply.

Ms Palaszczuk said the Bligh Government was reviewing its multicultural policy.

“As part of this review, we’re giving the public a chance to have its say, via the multicultural discussion paper I released last October, A multicultural future… for all of us, and with public forums held across the state,” she said.

“The Bligh Government recognises the many ways in which multicultural communities enrich the cultural life of our great State. I want to encourage all Queenslanders to have their say on the State’s future multicultural policy.”

Brisbane Powerhouse and the Indonesian community proudly present the biggest Indonesian party of the year!

Get ready to escape on a one day getaway to savour the flavour of Indonesia, as the annual Indonesian festival returns this year bringing Australia’s neighbour right to our doorstep.

The 2010 Indonesian festival, or most commonly known as Pesta Rakyat, will be held on October 3 at the renowned Brisbane Powerhouse to bring together the ultimate experience of all things Indonesian.

Following the success of last year’s celebration, Pesta Rakyat will showcase traditional arts and crafts, music, dances, and their most anticipated fashion show. For those who want to get their rhythm flowing, interactive music and dance workshops are available throughout the festival.

Project Officer, Anggraito Danangjoyo said, “this is the biggest celebration of our heritage in Brisbane, and we want to share our culture with the rest of the world”.

“This festival will be a great opportunity to show how Indonesia is much more than just Bali; it is a nation boasting 33 provinces, hundreds of ethnic groups, and thousands of surrounding remote islands,” said Anggraito.

Don’t forget that an Indonesian party will never be complete without food- the food bazaar will sure work up an appetite with the aromatic blend of herbs and spices from our traditional cuisines.

To top it off we have flown a classic, much-loved Indonesian singer, Katon Bagaskara, all the way from Indonesia to end the evening.
